'Vatican II' to hit the road

Now that the fictional St. Nicholas choir director Margaret Mary O'Malley has wrapped up her stay at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, Kathy Cogan is ready to take her show on the road.

"Vatican II: What the Hell Happened?" ended on Sunday and Cogan is now putting together a tour.

"One of the reasons I wanted to come to the Civic Center is that people really watch what happens here," she said.

Civic Center President Jeff Chelesvig can attest to that - during a weeklong stay in New York City he fielded a lot of inquiries about "Vatican II."

"There really is an interest in these smaller shows that can potentially run from a few weeks to longer," he said.

Cogan said the material in her one-woman show evolved a little during the past few weeks but what changed more was the dynamic of how the audience interacted with her. "Late Nite Catechism" was more in-your-face, and it took a bit for word to get out that "Vatican II" was different.

"People know that they are going to have fun so the audiences have been hysterical," she said.

Stops on the tour aren't worked out yet, but the show has already fielded interest from Florida, Rhode Island, North Carolina and Los Angeles. Cogan hopes to come back to Des Moines at some point in 2005 for another run.
